Healthy diet

  • A healthy diet helps to protect against malnutrition as well as non-communicable diseases (diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer).
  • Unhealthy eating and lack of physical activity, are causing global health risks.
  • Healthy eating practices start early in life – breastfeeding promotes healthy growth and reduces the risk of being overweight or obese.
  • Energy intake should balance with energy expenditure. Total fat should be limited to no more than 30% of daily calories, with saturated fat under 10% and trans fat under 1%.
  • Limit sugar intake to less than 10% of total energy intake. A further reduction to less than 5% of total energy intake is suggested for additional health benefits.
  • Keeping salt intake below 5 g per day helps prevent hypertension and reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke in the adult population.
